From first breath forward, our animals are part of the family.
At Colorado Kunes and Cows, our livestock are always humanely raised and cared for.
The KuneKune pigs graze grass in the summer (yep our pigs graze) and are given a grain/alfalfa feed when grass is infrequent. Likewise, our beef calves move from pasture to pasture during the summer and are fed timothy hay daily in the winter.
And of course - belly rubs and scratches for all - any time of the year!
Above is our 2020 breeding trio consisting of our boar, Jamie, and two gilts, Claire and Penny.
KuneKune Pigs
KuneKune pigs (pronounced “cooney-cooney”) are a small breed of domestic swine from New Zealand. Also called Kunes, these pigs are very well natured and easy to handle.
Unlike other pig breeds, the KuneKune has a short, upturned snout that prevents rooting and promotes grazing. Other distinctive characteristics include wattles or “piri piri” that hang from their chins. Kunes are hairy and range in many colors including: ginger, ginger/black, cream, belted/banded, tri, black, brown, black/white, brown/white, and ginger-swallow belly.
Grass-Fed Beef
Our beef cattle are raised on a diet of 100% grass and timothy hay. They receive no supplements or steroids of any kind!
Our calves are an Angus cross. They are delivered to SunnySide Meats (USDA) processing at 18 months of age.
We have sold to the Mancos and Durango school districts and local buyers.
